Making the Bed

I work on this issue everyday. Of course it comes up all the time in decorating and staging a home. Every time I am in a lifestyle store, furnishing store, show house, open house, or hotel, I photograph or write notes on how the bed is made. What is the configuration of the pillows, is there a duvet at the end of the bed or just a beautiful blanket? How much do you incorporate the same color ways on the bed to tie the design all together. Also there is the issue of how you handle the size of the bed: twin, full, Queen, King. King is the hardest for me. Do I use three or just two decorative Euro pillows 27x27 on the king size bed with two 18x18 pillows in front with a roll or rectanglar pillow 26x12? Bed skirt a must? What to do with sleeping pillows? Stack them and then lean decorative pillows against them? Also the sheets, do I have them showing or not? See how confusing it gets. I just want to get it right. Perfection like these examples below. But somehow I always fall short and I am not quite happy with the outcome.

Such beautiful images of fluffy beds! They are beautiful!

I worked at Shabby Chic for a while in the past and made beds A LOT. Usually when you get the bed just right...a customer comes a takes a pillow off of it or sits down on it!

I struggle with this same issue. When we upgraded to a king-size bed, it really got bad. Right now, I've got two Euros in back, but there's that weird gap between them.
I wish there were some kind of pillow formula so my bed could look like ANY of these!

I know, I have the same dilemma. Kings are the hardest to do, lately I have been doing 2 really long pillows. These images are wonderful though!

So true!!! I love all of your examples - the Howards know how to make a bed. Also, I do think some designers put too many pillows on a bed. You have to check out Charlotte Moss' stunning master bed (Aspen house) I just posted. Wow.

What a wonderful post. I think that there are so many ways to make a bed but it is so interesting to see how different designers do this. BTW, i like 3 Euros on a King. :)

Great examples here! It IS confusing! But I think it's fun trying new arrangements all the time. Thanks for the inspiration on new things to try!

I love every picture!! I was just telling my husband that I wish I could change our bedding on a yearly basis.... he didn't seem very thrilled with that.

My favorite look is when a fluffy duvet is folded at the end of the bed. But I imagine it's definitely a pain to do every day and you really need ironed or wrinkle-free sheets to pull off this look.

Love that pink bedroom.

I never know what to do with my bed anymore, because of that it just stays unmade. I know, so awful but when the BF is the last one out of bed and he never remembers to make it I just gave up. I'm saving some of these images for when I make the bed, so thanks!!

It gets tricky to have to many elements to consider and also so many different options. The great collection of inspirational pictures you've gathered here seems to demonstrate that beautiful beds come in so many personalities and there are many ways to achieve the WOW effect. I'm saving some of these pics for my bedroom files, thanks!

I love this post. So many wonderful examples. I think the key is to avoid king size beds which are ugly no matter what you do with them, and to always use euro shams in the back. I love all the different choices here.

I have the same problem! I always want my bed to look put together but also casual--a hard balance to find!

I so need a master bedroom redo right now. I'm so uninspired by mine. Sigh. Such gorgeous examples you've found for us!

I bet your bed really does look fantastic - no question there! but these beds are oh so heavenly, something about that extra comforter on the foot of the bed makes it that much more luxurious!

I love that last picture. And I can totally relate to what you're saying. I'm hosting a giveaway of Eleine Griffin's book right now and in the book she goes over how to dress the bed like professionals. Would you like to participate?
