Antique Silver Flatware

With the holiday season approaching we have been starting to think about setting up the dining room table. Last week I took one of our wonderful guests around to some thrift shops so that she could find flatware. She is such a sweetheart, she is from Charleston and she is in her ninety's. She is still entertaining and having house guests all the time. The problem is she had four sets of beautiful sterling silver but she has given it away to the younger generation. She said "I did not think I would live this long,"so now she is replacing it with silver plate. It took two days and one great lunch to find her silver plate. We ended up in Quechee Vt at the antique mall, which sounds tacky but has two hundred and fifty vendors!. One particular vendor had a whole table devoted to silver plate. She was so cute with her bundles of forks, spoons, and knives. Mission accomplished, then off to Simmon Pierce for lunch and some more eye candy.

Can you call silver plate antique?

A lot of silver plate is very old. The sheffield plate from england dates to the early 1800s. A lot of the english silver plate is marked and so you can tell the dates of it. there's a site that has the marks for english silverplate... and american silverplate, along with dates.
